The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has stepped up enforcement efforts against illegal mini slot machines across Montserrado County in Liberia.
The National Lottery Authority (NLA) announced that they have launched a series of coordinated raids and seizures against illegal gaming establishments in Liberia. Teams made up of NLA Inspectors from the Operations Department, Inspectorate Division and Monitoring & Evaluation Unit, along with various law enforcement agencies have been conducting targeted inspections of suspected illegal locations that operate illegal mini slot machines.
These operations have resulted in the closure of numerous illegal locations and the confiscation of illegal gaming devices. Currently the NLA is holding these machines while they conduct administrative proceedings under Liberia’s gambling laws. The NLA also expressed concern over the “alarming spread” of unregulated machines, and specifically pointed out how many of them are located in areas where children and other at-risk youth are likely to encounter them.
The NLA stated that all individuals who operate unlicensed mini slot machines could potentially face serious consequences, including the confiscation of their equipment and business, as well as potential criminal prosecution.
Christian K. Cooper, deputy director general for operations at the NLA, said:
Protecting our young people and restoring order within the gaming sector requires community cooperation.
He urged gambling operators to obtain proper licences and comply fully with regulatory requirements. He also stressed that anyone found enabling gambling activities involving minors would face strict legal consequences.
