Indonesia freezes 33,252 bank accounts

Indonesia blocked more than 33,000 bank accounts. The action followed bank accounts suspect of being tied to online gambling.

According to Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, banks were required to carry out enhanced due diligence measures, and 33,252 accounts were subsequently frozen, compared to the previous 32,556.

Diane Ediana Ray, the agency’s executive director of banking supervision, said the action is part of a broader effort to combat online gambling, which authorities believe has a significant impact on the economy and financial system.

The crackdown has not just been limited to account closures. OJK has also cancelled the licenses of 6 rural banks between January and March 2026 as a result of their supervisory and consumer protection responsibilities.

The account freezes are yet another part of Indonesia’s effort to combat judol activity, which the authorities believe adds layers of risk beyond just gambling.
