China embassy in warns citizens to avoid gambling abroad

The Chinese embassy in Singapore has issued a stern warning to its citizens, urging them to avoid gambling activities abroad, even in jurisdictions where casinos operate legally.

The advisory emphasizes that engaging in gambling activities outside of mainland China may violate Chinese law and lead to serious personal and legal consequences, including financial ruin, family breakdown, and even death.

The warning came after incidents involving Chinese nationals in Singapore, including a reported gambling-related death at the Marina Bay Sands resort complex, which prompted the embassy to assist the person’s family and reiterate its legal guidance.

Chinese authorities have stated that cross-border gambling activities remain prohibited under domestic law, and citizens may face criminal prosecution if they participate in betting activities abroad.

In its message, the embassy highlighted the broader risks associated with gambling activities, including fraud, money laundering, kidnapping, detention, human trafficking, and smuggling concerns that extend beyond legal status to issues of personal safety and security. It also reminded citizens that diplomatic missions cannot guarantee consular protection for individuals involved in illegal activities abroad.

As travel increases during holidays like the Spring Festival, Chinese diplomatic missions are urging tourists and residents to exercise stronger legal awareness, advising them to prioritize compliance with national laws and avoid gambling abroad.
